Thankful Thursday: The Tournament

I can't believe that it's a week since I posted on this blog.  I think it may be the longest period I've gone without posting when I've been in this country since I started the blog in 2007.  I am now hitting the problem of currency.  All my posts for Art Deco Weekend and even my Northland posts will no longer be current and whilst that won't matter in the least to you as a reader it's a question of mindset for me, the writer.

As you may imagine it's been a busy couple of weeks and the tournament was particularly time consuming both in terms of time spent on the lawns and time spent socialising and, I have to admit, sleeping.  Gone are the nights of 5 hours sleep; now I seem to require 6 or even 7 hours and it's eating into my 'doing' time [sorry Francis, I feel sure you wouldn't approve of the use of those 's].

Excuse me whilst I deprive a mosquito of its existence.  I can't go to sleep or type a blog post with a mozzie buzzing around.  Done.  Leastways lots of spray distributed liberally in the area of the room to where he (or, worse still, she - the bitey one) retreated.  Oddly I have become more allergic to mozzie bites rather than less as my time here progresses.  Fortunately Mozzies carrying any disease likely to be serious to man are rare in New Zealand

The tournament was both enjoyable and, for me, successful.  Having languished in the doldrums for the last season with relatively few tournament successes I managed to win the Bay of Plenty Golf Croquet Open Championship.  I was, I have to admit, fair chuffed.  That evening I went to Katherine's for supper with some of her friends and family.  As one might imagine from her blog the company she keeps is equally interesting.  I had a wonderful evening.  When I replied to her question as to how I'd done at the tournament with the news of my win she responded "and how are you going to blog about that and not sound as though you are boasting?" (or something like that).  Well you can judge whether my mentioning it was boasting or not.  I'll accept whatever judgement you bestow.  'Cos I won!

So today I am thankful, as I usually am these days, for my full and interesting (to me) life.  I am thankful for the win which has lifted my croquet spirits from the doldrums.

But to put all that into perspective I am thankful today for the news I received last evening from a croquet friend and doubles partner with whom I won the Vets (veterans - nothing to do with furry creatures) this year.  She has had the all-clear after her latest check-up after having had a cancer removed last year).

  1. Very good reasons to be thankful for, indeed! And I have noticed the gap between this post and the previous one, and went to check a few times in between, thinking it might have been a bug with blogger again, preventing me from seeing new posts you had written.
I agree about the currency problem. Last year in September, I spent a week on Majorca, and fully intended to blog about it and show some pictures. Well, I never did, and although I could have done this any time, no matter how long ago the holiday was, I just didn't feel like it anymore after a while. Same happened to my long-planned autumn wardrobe post. A few of the pictures I had intended to use on that one have since found their way into my Fashion Calendar posts, but there are about 45 more which will most likely never see daylight.

    1. It is just in our minds though and I'm determined to get at least some of the Art Deco ones and as many of the Northland ones as possible. Some rainy weather would help!

    1. The mozzies aren't really a big problem but they seem to like me.

  5. Well done you! As for wanting rain for some catching up on blogs time - are you kidding me?

After one and a half days of sun (ish), it was back to sleet and high wind yesterday and although it feels a tad warmer today, yes, you have guessed it, it is raining again and blowing a gale. SO NO MORE TALK OF WANTING SOME RAIN.

    1. Did I say somewhere that I wanted more rain? Sorry but I can't recall wanting it. There's so much of it this year it's almost a foregone conclusion that there will be rain some time in a week.

    2. I have gone back over your blog posting and cannot find the sentence about rain. It went something like "the good thing about it raining is that it gives me blog time." OR did I dream it? Dunno! Perhaps it is the continual rain here that has rusted my brain - it wasn't important anyway. Hope this weather cheers up for your homecoming. I will put your wellies in the car just in case!

    3. Yes, Spesh, I did say something like that somewhere. Just me playing the Glad Game.

  6. Well Geeb, I am rather mortified that I said you should not boast...I must have had too much wine and it came out wrong. I was thinking at the time you had done so wonderfully, you had every reason to be very, very proud!
    Congratulations again.

PS I love the way you said 'deprive a mosquito of its existence'. What a great way of putting it.

    1. Katherine you have absolutely no need to be mortified. What you said and the way you said it were very matter of fact and quite justified. I took notice even if I actually drew attention to my boast in a slightly circuitous way. When did you guzzle the wine? Are you a secret drinker? I can't recall actually ever seeing you drink alcohol. My mind can't have been be-fuddled that evening either 'cos I was driving and therefore not drinking.

  7. Well done! I know what you mean about current posts, but post them anyhow, we won't mind even though you do! When are you heading back to this part of the world?
